Organic eggs have larger climate footprint than caged eggs
A new study finds that eggs from organic farming systems produce higher greenhouse gas emissions per dozen than eggs from caged hens. The difference is partly due to the slower growth and higher feed requirements of free-range organic chickens. This challenges the assumption that all organic food is automatically better for the environment, highlighting trade-offs in food production choices.
